What to Expect in Your First Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class

Starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) classes is an exciting journey that builds discipline, confidence, and strength. At ACE Martial Arts, we’ve created a welcoming environment for all levels, making your introduction to the art of grappling as smooth as possible. Here’s everything you need to know before stepping onto the mats.

What to Wear and Bring

For your first class, wear comfortable athletic clothing. We can lend you one to start if you don’t have a gi (the traditional BJJ uniform). You’ll eventually need to purchase your own. For No-Gi classes, a rash guard and shorts are ideal. Don’t forget to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated!

Class Structure

Our BJJ classes are structured to help you learn and grow at your own pace. Here’s what to expect:

  • Warm-Up: Dynamic stretches and drills like shrimping and rolling to prepare your body.
  • Technique Training: Learn foundational moves, such as guard retention or escapes, with a focus on safety and understanding.
  • Rolling & Sparring (Optional): Apply what you’ve learned through live practice in a controlled and supervised environment.
